![]() All of those ideas and concepts would have probably been way more successful and had the wiggle room for experimentation and adjustments had they not been shackled by the Sonic brand and it's mechanics. ![]() I get that a lot of people liked some of the 3D ones, and usually cite the first DC game, but I think people really like those games in spite of them being Sonic games, not because of it. In that they shouldn't have ever gone 3D, because the core mechanics of Sonic just don't translate, and trying to force them to has set up an artificial "problem" that developers seem to think is important and worth solving, when it just isn't. But while Sonic is a mascot, in Japan it is far less popular so I also see why other franchises do get some level of higher priority at times. From their parent company and corporate level, it's kinda right to assume that the games are the afterthought. The fact that development has more of a story to it then the games is kind of humorus on its own. I think a lot of people are right to say Sega uses Sonic as a vehicle for merch and media. With all of the turmoil at Sega, including multiple dev teams under Sonic Team alternating, high turnover from game to game, mismanaged leads for roles when they excelled in others, and innovative ideas being passed over by corporate (Or with Forces the avatar idea being shoehorned in as an afterthought while it was originally pitched as its own thing) we see a middling product as the result. It's about physics and level design and I don't know how well Sega can pull either off consistently. On the other hand, the adventure formula tweaked can work. They constantly upgrade and reiterate the Hedgehog engine and that's had diminishing returns. Now if only we could see thought and planning put I to a mainline title. We had the usual "Nomura vs Tabata" Final Fantasy stuff just last night. It's not the only bit of industry fanfiction that gets spread around here either. Sonic Team are the ones who came up with the idea to make Mania and brought all those indie darlings together and SEGA most assuredly liked the positive press and sales. it's just based on nothing but that desire. It's this desire for people to vilify SEGA and Sonic Team as some bitter corporate hacks who are jealous of the raw talent of these precious indie darlings and like. Almost everyone with a major role in Mania has been brought back by SEGA except for Whitehead and Jared (and even then, they WERE brought back for Plus). ![]() When you press people on it they'll just say "I mean come on, it's obvious" when like. This is such a commonly spread claim everywhere that just has zero basis in any known information. They were only known for little mobile games before that but still, like twitter accounts all inactive for years level of disappearance.Ĭlick to shrink.That's what drives me crazy. There's nothing to suggest bad blood between any of them, it was an incredibly smart move to use the momentum from Mania to try and establish his own brand if that was his goal.Įdit: Honestly, out of everyone who worked on Sonic Mania, I want to know what happened to Jared Kasl and PagadoaWest Games. If SEGA "loathed" the Mania devs, I don't think this would have happened.Īnd finally, Whitehead (who was not the sole creator of Sonic Mania despite how people talk about him) went on to make his own studio and is working on his own IP. Third, Sonic Mania Plus was made a year later. Stealth/Headcannon are working on Sonic Origins, Tyson Hesse has become very integrated into the brand, Tee Lopes was brought on for music in Team Sonic Racing, several producers on Mania have gone on to be producers on future Sonic projects, etc. Second, they've worked with tons of Mania devs since. There is absolutely ZERO evidence to support this claim whatsoever.įor one, Iizuka is the one who brought the teams that made Mania together and was supervisor on the project.
